The Hafod Press was established in January 2000 to sponsor research into the historic gardens of counties Cork and Kerry, most of which were created between 1760 and 1940. We believe that these gardens, with their cosmopolitan array of species and styles merged into the distinctive landscapes and climate of south west Ireland, represent a unique cultural phenomenon and one of the most significant contributions of Ireland to the visual arts . Many of these gardens are in serious decline as a result of neglect, careless development or ill-judged schemes of restoration.

Our research draws on a wide variety of sources, including family archives and old photographs themselves often at risk through decay or dispersal .It is hoped to draw up a definitive record of the creation of the historic gardens of south west Ireland before such evidence is irretrievably lost. Significant discoveries have already been made in what has been a highly neglected area of Irish achievement.

Our editor, Nigel Everett, has a good deal of experience in this kind of work; he has a doctorate from Cambridge University and is the author of an influential work of cultural history, The Tory View of Landscape, published by Yale University Press in 1994.Our aim is to combine high standards of scholarship with a readable style and abundant use of illustrations, mainly historic photographs.
